With a population of 59,638 as of the 2020 census, Great Falls is the third largest city in the state of Montana. Located along the Missouri River and situated near several waterfalls, Great Falls gets its name from the series of five waterfalls along the river that descend over 500 feet within a stretch of the river. The city has a rich history and serves as an economic hub for north central Montana.

History

The Great Falls area was long inhabited by Native American tribes like the Blackfeet, Cree, and Sioux who followed the bison herds that populated the plains. The first European explorers came through the area in the late 1700s, including Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their famous expedition in 1805. They portaged around the five waterfalls on the Missouri River, which Lewis described in his journal, leading to the future name for the city.

Permanent white settlement began in 1858 with a trading post called Grand Falls. The town grew slowly until 1883 when the railroad came through, bringing substantial growth and development. Great Falls was officially incorporated as a city in 1888. In the early 20th century it became known for its "black smoke prosperity" with the rise of copper and zinc refineries, as well as a major producer of barley and cattle.
