History of Wentzville, Missouri [1]

The area that became Wentzville was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Sac, Fox, and Osage peoples. The first European settlers arrived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1855, William Wentz, an immigrant from Germany, purchased a 200-acre farm in western St. Charles County. Wentz allowed the Northern Missouri Railroad to establish a stop on his land, which soon became known as Wentzville Station.

The town of Wentzville was incorporated in 1888. It was named for its founder William Wentz and grew as a railroad shipping point for area agriculture. The population in 1890 was 200 people. Over the years businesses were established around the train depot, including hotels, stores, banks, and saloons.

After World War II, the population of Wentzville began to expand more rapidly as it evolved into a commuter suburb. With the completion of Interstate 70 in the 1960s, additional growth occurred. Wentzville adopted a city charter in 1976 and continued to grow in population over the following decades. Today it is one of the fastest growing cities in Missouri.
