History

University City has its origins as a streetcar suburb, beginning development in the early 20th century. The first housing subdivisions were built in the 1910s to accommodate families wishing to move outside of St. Louis city limits. It incorporated as a city in 1936. Post-World War II, the city saw another major growth spurt as returning GIs sought new housing away from crowded urban neighborhoods. Over the decades, the city has become increasingly ethnically diverse, transitioning in the 1960s and 1970s from an overwhelmingly white population to one representing many races and nationalities.
