History

Saint Joseph was founded in 1843 by Joseph Robidoux as a western outfitting post for wagon trains heading west on the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails. It quickly became an important supply point and trading center along the trails and the Missouri River. The early economy was fueled by the freight, trading, and agricultural industries.

During the Civil War, the city was site to several major battles and troop movements. It was occupied by Union forces for most of the war. After the war, Saint Joseph continued to grow as a commercial and transportation hub. The Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad connected the city by rail to populations centers east and west in 1859, further cementing its central role.

The city saw rapid growth and development through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Notable landmarks such as the Patee House, Missouri Theater, and Central High School were constructed during this time. Food manufacturing became a major local industry, with companies such as Swift, Armour, and Dole operating large plants in the city.
