Joplin is a city located in southwest Missouri in Jasper County and Newton County. As of the 2020 census, the population was 51,542, making it the 12th largest city in Missouri. Joplin is situated near the borders of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

History

Joplin was founded in 1873 and named after Reverend Harris Joplin, a Methodist minister who settled in the area. Joplin grew rapidly as a lead and zinc mining town. It was incorporated as a city in 1873. By the start of the 20th century, downtown Joplin was home to many grand commercial buildings of stone and brick. However, a major tornado devastated downtown on May 22, 2011, destroying hundreds of buildings including the city's public library. According to the 2020 census, Joplin had a population of 51,542 people. The racial makeup of the city was 87.4% White, 1.9% Black or African American, 1.7% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 3.6% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. 8.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
