Tupelo is a city located in northeastern Mississippi, United States. With a population of 38,114 as of the 2020 census, Tupelo is the seventh-largest city in the state. The city is the county seat of Lee County, Mississippi.

History

The area now known as Tupelo was originally occupied by various native American tribes before European settlement began in the 1830s. The name "Tupelo" is of Native American origin, coming from the Creek word "opilwa" meaning "swamp". Tupelo was incorporated in 1870 and developed quickly due to its location along a railroad line.
