With a population of 38,684 as of 2019, Olive Branch, Mississippi is a charming city located in DeSoto County in northwest Mississippi. Although a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee, Olive Branch has developed its own unique identity and sense of community over the years.

History

The first residents of what is now Olive Branch were Native Americans, specifically members of the Chickasaw tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the 1830s, establishing homesteads and farms in the fertile land. Cotton emerged as a major crop and driver of the local economy. Olive Branch got its name from a graceful tree that sat near the town square. On March 25, 1858, Olive Branch officially incorporated and elected Lewis Evans as its first mayor.

Like many Southern towns, Olive Branch's early history is marked by the prevalence of slavery on the agricultural plantations. The Civil War and Reconstruction brought major changes to the social fabric. While the early 20th century saw continued struggles over racial equality, the community gradually made progress. Growth remained slow until the latter half of the 20th century.

The real turning point came in the 1970s, when improved highways and affordable housing drew an influx of new residents. With Memphis expanding, Olive Branch emerged as a popular suburb. Careful planning helped manage this rapid growth, retaining Olive Branch's small town charm while offering residents access to urban amenities.

Today, Olive Branch pays homage to its past while looking forward to the future. Historic landmarks intermix seamlessly with new homes, businesses, and recreation. The downtown historic district remains at the heart of the community.
