With a population of around 40,000 residents, Meridian is the second largest city in Mississippi after the state capital Jackson. Located in Lauderdale County in east Mississippi, Meridian lies where Interstate 20 and Interstate 59 intersect. The city has a rich history and has been an important railroad hub since the 19th century.

History of Meridian

Meridian was founded in 1860 at the intersection of the Mobile and Ohio and Southern Railroads. It was named after the rail line that ran from Mobile, Alabama to the Mississippi-Louisiana border. During the Civil War, Meridian was an important Confederate arsenal and railroad center. In 1864, Union forces led by General William Tecumseh Sherman captured Meridian and destroyed the railroads, bridges, businesses and homes.

After the Civil War, Meridian quickly rebuilt and continued to thrive as a railroad center. The city became home to two major railroad companies - the Mobile and Ohio, and the Southern Railway. By 1900, nearly 150 trains passed through the city every day. The railroads helped Meridian grow into a bustling downtown area with shops, businesses, hotels, and theaters.

Meridian continued to prosper through the Jim Crow era and the Great Depression. During World War II, the Meridian Naval Air Station provided pilot training. After the war, highways replaced some railroad traffic but the city remained an important transportation hub.

Today, Meridian retains its historic downtown area and railroad heritage. Many historic buildings have been restored and adapted for new uses. Though no longer the bustling railroad city of the past, Meridian continues to embrace its unique history while building a new future.
