Hattiesburg is a city in southeastern Mississippi with a population of around 46,000 residents. It is the county seat of Forrest County and was founded in 1882. Hattiesburg is nicknamed "The Hub City" due to its location at the intersection of several major rail lines. Over the years, Hattiesburg has grown into the economic, cultural and political center of southeastern Mississippi.

History of Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg was founded in 1882 by civil engineer William H. Hardy and businessman Capt. William H. Hardy as a railroad town at the intersection of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad and the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad. The city was named after Hardy's wife Hattie. The railroads brought tremendous growth to Hattiesburg in its early years. Timber and naval stores were the main industries, bringing millions of dollars of revenue. Downtown Hattiesburg grew quickly with hotels, banks, law offices, and other businesses. In 1924, the Hattiesburg Municipal Airport was constructed, one of the first municipally-owned airports in the nation. During World War II, Camp Shelby and Hattiesburg Army Airfield brought thousands of soldiers to the area. After the war, Hattiesburg continued to grow, with its population more than doubling from 1950 to 1980. The University of Southern Mississippi also expanded during this time. Today, Hattiesburg remains a regional center for education, healthcare, shopping, dining, culture and entertainment in southeastern Mississippi.
