History of Gulfport

Gulfport was incorporated on July 28, 1898. The city originated as a planned community by businessmen from Chicago shortly after the completion of the first railroad linking the coast to Chicago. This railroad, the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad, gave Gulfport superior access to inland resources and markets compared to other Mississippi coastal communities.

Gulfport's location on the coast made it prime real estate for shipping and transportation. The Gulf and Ship Island Railroad enabled the export of yellow pine lumber from inland and import of various goods through the coast. Gulfport quickly became established as a lumber port.

The early 1900s brought remarkable growth to Gulfport. The Sea Coast Echo newspaper began publication in 1905. In 1906, Gulfport opened the first public high school on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Gulfport Harbor Channel was completed in 1908, providing deeper water for larger ships. By 1910, the population swelled to 5,467 residents.

Damage from several hurricanes in the early 1900s impeded Gulfport’s growth. However, the city recovered and continued to develop. Passenger and freight traffic through Gulfport increased after the completion of the new Gulfport Harbor Channel and the US entered World War I in 1917. The 1920s brought a construction boom in Gulfport with new hotels, businesses, and homes.

The Depression era slowed growth, but Gulfport recovered during World War II. Keesler Air Force Base opened in 1941 just west of the city. The influx of servicemen stimulated the economy. Rexall Drug Company opened a major pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Gulfport in 1949. After the war, Gulfport evoloved into a diversified city.

In 1969, Gulfport and the other Mississippi coastal communities were ravaged by Hurricane Camille, the second Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the US. Although Gulfport reconstructed, decades passed before the city fully recovered. Growth resumed in the late 1990s, butHurricane Katrina brought catastrophic damage in 2005. Despite setbacks, Gulfport remains a vibrant coastal community.

Today, Gulfport works to rebuild and improve from past hurricanes while focusing on economic development. The opening of new casinos, hotels, restaurants and harbor renovations have helped revitalize Gulfport in recent years.
