Weymouth Town is a city in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Located approximately 13 miles south of central Boston, Weymouth Town had a population of 55,643 as of the 2020 census.

History of Weymouth Town

Weymouth Town was first settled in 1622 and was incorporated in 1635. It was named after Weymouth, Dorset, a coastal town in England.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Weymouth Town was an important agricultural area and seaport. The town held significance during the American Revolution as the birthplace of Abigail Adams, wife of founding father and 2nd U.S. President John Adams.

In the 19th century, Weymouth Town became a vacation area and grew as a residential suburb of Boston. Shoe manufacturing and leather processing were important industries. The town continues to grow as a commuter suburb today while maintaining its rich history.

Population

According to the 2020 census, Weymouth Town had a population of 55,643 residents, making it the 16th largest municipality in Massachusetts. The racial makeup of the town was approximately 87.2% White, 5.5% Black or African American, 0.1% Native American, 3.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Approximately 3.5% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino of any race.
