Watertown is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the Greater Boston area. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,927. Watertown is one of fourteen Massachusetts municipalities that have applied for, and been granted, city forms of government but wish to retain "The town of" in their official names.

Watertown's proximity to Cambridge and Boston has brought newer restaurants, music venues, and the like closer to the square. It is a very short distance from Watertown Square to Harvard Square or Boston. Watertown Square consists of two intersecting streets, Mount Auburn Street and Main Street. A few yards farther is Dexter Avenue, which leads to Watertown Yard, the eastern terminus of the Watertown-Cambridge bus line.

History

Archeological evidence suggests that Watertown was inhabited for thousands of years before the arrival of settlers from England. The area was home to the indigenous Massachusett people and was culturally connected to neighborhoods of Boston which had been settled only a few years earlier on the other side of the Charles River.

In 1630, representatives of the newly established Massachusetts Bay Company bought land along the Charles River from John Oldham. The next year, a group of 140 Puritan colonists sailed from England and settled this land, which they called Watertown, naming it after a city of the same name in England's East Riding of Yorkshire. It was the first inland settlement in Massachusetts Colony and one of the largest communities in New England in the early years of the colony.
