Waltham is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was estimated to be 62,923 residents, making it the fifth largest city in Massachusetts.

History

Waltham was first settled in 1634 and was incorporated as a town in 1738. For much of its early history, Waltham was primarily an agricultural community. That changed in 1814 when Boston Manufacturing Company was founded on the Charles River and became the first factory in America to successfully use power looms and the mill town system. This sparked Waltham's transformation into one of the birthplaces of the American Industrial Revolution. Other textile mills and factories soon opened, utilizing the power of the Charles River.

Waltham continued to grow as a center of production and innovation in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Waltham Watch Company produced over 35 million watches, clocks, speedometers, compasses, and other precision instruments in Waltham between 1850 and 1957. Other major companies in Waltham's history include the chemical company Metropolitan Chemical Corporation and Raytheon, a major American defense contractor and industrial corporation. Waltham has also been home to several higher education institutions including Brandeis University.

Today, while smaller high-tech and biotech companies have moved into the area, Waltham retains much of its distinctive character as a historic "city of watches" and birthplace of American industry. For more on Waltham's history, visit the Waltham Public Library.
