Taunton is a historic city located in Bristol County in southeastern Massachusetts, United States. As of 2019, the population was 56,928, making it the 7th largest city in Massachusetts. Taunton has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was founded by Elizabeth Poole in 1637.

History

Taunton was first settled in 1637 by Elizabeth Poole and others from Tetbury, England. The city was officially incorporated in 1639 and named after Taunton in Somerset, England. Taunton grew as an important iron-manufacturing center and was home to the first successful iron works established in British North America in 1656 called the Taunton Iron Works. The iron from Taunton helped supply the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

In the 19th century, Taunton became a major textile manufacturing center known as the "Silver City" due to the large number of silversmithing businesses producing goods. The city continued to thrive industrially into the 20th century but experienced decline as industries left. More recently, Taunton has focused on revitalization efforts including downtown redevelopment.

Taunton is situated along the Taunton River which leads to Mount Hope Bay and Narragansett Bay. It is the county seat of Bristol County. The city is located approximately 35 miles south of Boston, 25 miles east of Providence, Rhode Island, and 195 miles northeast of New York City.
