Shrewsbury is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts with a population of 37,510 as of 2020. Originally inhabited by Nipmuc Indians, Shrewsbury was first settled in 1722 and incorporated in 1727. Over the centuries it evolved from a quiet agricultural community to a thriving suburban town.

History

Shrewsbury has a rich history dating back to pre-colonial times. The Nipmuc Indians were the original inhabitants of the area. In 1722, colonists from Marlborough and Sudbury founded the town and named it after Shrewsbury, England. Shrewsbury was officially incorporated as a town in 1727.

During the colonial era, Shrewsbury residents practiced subsistence farming. The town common was located on the site of the current town hall. In 1735, the first church was established. Shrewsbury later became a stop on the Boston to New York stagecoach line. In the early 1800s, large country estates and summer homes were built by wealthy families from Boston and Worcester, leading to Shrewsbury's nickname "Garden Town".

In the mid 1800s, Shrewsbury evolved into a mill town. The Mill River provided water power for saw mills, grist mills and tool factories. The community grew with the establishment of several historic villages - Shrewsbury Center, South Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury Green and Sewall Hill. Railroad service arrived in 1846, further expanding business and industry.

By the early 1900s, Shrewsbury was home to diverse manufacturing including textiles, shoes, and metal works. Improved transportation brought more development and newcomers. Post WWII growth turned Shrewsbury into a suburban residential community, with many residents commuting to Worcester and Boston for work. High tech industries located in Shrewsbury in the 1980s and 90s.
