Randolph is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 32,112 at the 2010 census. Randolph adopted a new charter effective January 2010 providing for a council-manager form of government instead of the traditional town meeting. Randolph is part of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council's South Shore Coalition.

History

Randolph was settled in 1793 when after many unsuccessful attempts during the previous 150 years, a permanent settlement was finally established in the portion of the town known as East Randolph. The area was referred to as "Cochatoset" by the local Abenaki Native American tribe. The town was named for Peyton Randolph, first president of the Continental Congress. Randolph was formally incorporated on March 9, 1793, over a century after most surrounding towns were established. Other area towns broke off and incorporated at various times, Braintree in 1640, Holbrook 1868, and Avon 1888. The town's historic aboriginal inhabitants were largely Massachusett-language-speaking Nipmuc, but the local water supply at the Blue Hills attracted successive waves of indigenous inhabitants before European colonization.

The town originally included an area called "Cochatoset", later renamed "Stoughtonham" and ultimately incorporated separately as the town of Stoughton in 1726. Starting as a rural farming community of 200 people, Randolph developed an industrial and suburban character in the late 19th century and was home to the Howard Watch Company, the nation's first large-scale watch factory. Designed by Alexander Parris, the architect of Quincy Market, the factory marked a major change in the nature of the town's economy as it transitioned from agricultural to industrial purposes.

Randolph was a major producer of boots and shoes during the 19th century - at its peak, one-third of its labor force was employed in shoe production and shoe-related work. After the decline of the shoe industry, the carpet industry arrived in Randolph in 1913 with the construction of the Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad. After World War II, the growth of the town accelerated as it transitioned from a mostly rural and industrial town to a suburban residential community. Today Randolph is largely residential, with little remaining industry or agriculture.
