Plymouth is a historic coastal city located in Plymouth County in southeastern Massachusetts. It is one of the oldest municipalities in New England. Plymouth was founded in 1620 by Pilgrims from England. It was the site of the first landing of the Mayflower and is known as "America's Hometown." As of 2021, the population of Plymouth was 62,868.

History

Plymouth played a central role in the history of colonial America. In 1620, the Plymouth Colony was established by English Puritans, later known as the Pilgrims. The settlers arrived aboard the Mayflower ship. Before landing, they signed the Mayflower Compact, one of the first governing documents in America.

The Pilgrims' first winter in the New World was difficult. Half of the original 102 settlers died. In spring 1621, the remaining colonists were taught farming techniques by the native Wampanoag tribe. That autumn, the Pilgrims celebrated their first successful harvest with a three-day festival shared with the Wampanoags. This event, known as the "First Thanksgiving", became a New England tradition.

Plymouth served as the capital of the Plymouth Colony until its merger with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691. It remained an active port and shipbuilding center through the Revolutionary War era. Today, over 10 million people claim descent from the original Mayflower Pilgrims.
