Some key facts about Pittsfield:

History

Pittsfield was settled in 1752 and was officially incorporated in 1761. It was named after William Pitt, who was the Prime Minister of Great Britain at the time. Pittsfield developed as an agricultural area due to the many brooks that flowed into the Housatonic River. Mills were built along these brooks for grinding grain and other purposes.

In 1891, Pittsfield was chosen as the site of the Checks and Balances Aqueduct, providing fresh drinking water to the city from the Long Pond Reservoir. This helped the city expand its manufacturing base, which previously had relied on the rivers. Companies like Eaton Paper Corporation, Crane Company, and General Electric established factories in Pittsfield. GE moved its headquarters to Pittsfield in the mid 20th century and at its peak employed over 13,000 people in the city.
