For much of its early history, Newton was a rural area with most residents living on small farms growing fruits, vegetables, hay, and dairy farming. In the 18th and 19th century, small mills and factories opened up around the Charles River and other streams that provided water power.

As Boston expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Newton transformed into a streetcar suburb with commuter rail access. It developed into an affluent residential community. Its population grew rapidly in the post-World War II economic expansion. Its location near Boston and Route 128 has also made it popular with businesses.
