History of Methuen

Methuen has a long and storied history dating back to the 17th century. It was founded in 1642 as part of the town of Haverhill. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes of the Pennacook confederacy. Early settlers were engaged in agriculture and lumber industries from the Spicket and Merrimack rivers. In 1725, Methuen was established as a separate parish. A year later in 1726, it was officially incorporated as a town named after Sir Paul Methuen, a diplomat and friend of King George I.

During the 19th century, Methuen evolved into an important mill town and center of industry along with other Merrimack Valley communities. The construction of the Methuen Company mills in the 1820s ushered in Methuen's industrial boom. Other major mills like the Nevins Works also helped drive Methuen's economy. The industrial growth attracted many immigrants to settle in Methuen in the late 1800s and early 1900s leading to a population surge. Methuen was officially incorporated as a city in 1911.
