Marlborough was first settled in 1657 by Europeans. The settlers initially named the town after Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. In 1660, settlers petitioned to have the town incorporated, and an act of incorporation was approved the same year by the Massachusetts General Court, which made Marlborough an independent town with the name of Marlborough.
