History

Lowell was founded in 1822 as a planned manufacturing center called "The City of Spindles", named after Francis Cabot Lowell. It quickly became a thriving mill town due to its location along the rapids of the Merrimack River, which provided water power for running the mills. The textile industry flourished in Lowell during the 19th century and immigrants flocked to the city to work in the mills. However, the textile industry began declining in the early 20th century and the city fell into hard economic times.
