Lexington is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 33,006 as of 2020 census estimates. Lexington was first settled circa 1642 and was officially incorporated in 1713. It is one of the towns that make up the Greater Boston metropolitan area.

Lexington is located approximately 11 miles northwest of downtown Boston at 42.447591° N, 71.227041° W. It is bordered by the towns of Burlington, Woburn, Winchester, Arlington, Belmont, Waltham, Lincoln, and Bedford.

History

Lexington was first settled circa 1642 as part of Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1713. Lexington got its name from Lexington, England.

Lexington is famous as the site of the first shot of the American Revolutionary War. On April 19, 1775, the battles of Lexington and Concord kicked off the conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and its 13 colonies. Today, Lexington preserves its history from the Revolutionary War era at sites like the Minute Man National Historical Park and the Lexington Historical Society.
