Lawrence is a city located in Essex County in the state of Massachusetts. As of the 2020 census, the population of Lawrence was estimated to be 79,870 residents, making it the 4th largest city by population in Massachusetts.

History of Lawrence

Lawrence was founded in 1845 and was named after the famous Boston merchant, manufacturer and politician Amos Lawrence. Lawrence was historically a major textile manufacturing center and immigrants were drawn to opportunities working at the mills including the Wood Mill, Pemberton Mill, Atlantic Mill and others. The 1912 Bread and Roses strike involving textile workers brought national attention to issues in Lawrence. Over time, Lawrence evolved into a more diversified economy and today has a variety of industries including technology and medical device manufacturing.
