Holyoke is a city in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States that had a population of 40,117 as of the 2020 census. Once home to over 50 paper mills and countless manufacturing companies, Holyoke has transitioned to a more diversified economy over the years. Home to renowned art museums, lush parks, historic buildings, and a lively local community, Holyoke has much to offer residents and visitors alike.

History of Holyoke

The area now known as Holyoke was originally inhabited by the Nonotuck tribe of Native Americans. The first European explorers arrived in the 1600s, establishing trading posts and camps. In the early 1800s, the Hadley Falls Company was established to construct a dam and canal system to harness the power of the Connecticut River. This spurred rapid industrial development and population growth. The City of Holyoke was officially incorporated in 1850, named after Elizur Holyoke, an early settler.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Holyoke earned the nickname "Paper City" due to the numerous paper mills and manufacturers located along the canals. At one point, Holyoke produced 80% of the writing paper used in the United States. The Holyoke Machine Company, founded in 1887, was also a major contributor to the local economy. However, as manufacturing and industry declined across New England, Holyoke's mills and factories closed over the years, leading to population decline. Despite this, Holyoke remains an important cultural, educational, and economic center of Western Massachusetts.
