History of Haverhill

Haverhill was founded in 1640 and was originally part of the town of Salisbury. It was named after the city of Haverhill, England. In 1642, Rev. John Ward became the first minister of the town and Shoebridge was chosen as the site for the village. Haverhill was officially incorporated as a town in 1645.

The town was primarily agricultural for the first 200 years. However, by the mid-19th century, it became a major industrial center, with factories producing wool, leather, lumber, and shoes. Many rivers provided water power for the factories. Immigrants came from England, Ireland, Canada, and later Italy and Poland to work in the factories.
