Fitchburg is a city in Worcester County in central Massachusetts, United States. Located along the Nashua River, Fitchburg is home to over 40,000 residents as of the 2020 census, making it one of the larger cities in Central Massachusetts.

History

Fitchburg was first settled in the early 1700s and officially incorporated as a town in 1764. It developed as an industrial mill town, taking advantage of the Nashua River as a source of water power. The history of Fitchburg includes the development of many paper mills and machine shops beginning in the 1800s. The city was also connected to Boston and other areas by railroad in the mid 1800s, further enabling its manufacturing and economic growth. Fitchburg was incorporated as a city in 1872.

Geography

Fitchburg is located in north-central Massachusetts, about 50 miles west of Boston. It covers a total area of 28.1 square miles, of which 27.8 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles (1.09%) is water. Fitchburg is situated along the Nashua River which runs through the northern end of the city. Fitchburg is the county seat of Worcester County. As of the 2020 census, there were 43,343 people living in Fitchburg. The racial makeup of the city was: White alone: 73.98% Hispanic or Latino: 20.99% Black or African American alone: 4.89% Asian alone: 3.21% Two or more races: 2.54% The median household income was $53,071 and 18.7% of residents were living below the poverty line. Fitchburg saw its population peak in 1970 at about 43,000 residents. The population declined in the late 20th century but has started growing again in recent years.
