History of Chicopee

Chicopee has a long and notable history dating back to the 17th century. The land that is now Chicopee was originally inhabited by the Nipmuc Indians. The first permanent settlements in Chicopee were established in the 1650s by English colonists. The area was originally part of the township of Springfield.

In 1848, Chicopee was incorporated as its own town and city. The name Chicopee comes from the Chicopee River which runs through the region.
