Chelmsford is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the town's population was 35,641. Chelmsford is located 24 miles northwest of Boston and, bordering on the city of Lowell, is part of the Greater Lowell metropolitan area. Besides Lowell on its northeast, Chelmsford is surrounded by four towns: Tyngsborough to the north, Billerica to the southeast, Carlisle to the south, and Westford to the west.

History of Chelmsford

Chelmsford was incorporated in May 1655. It was named after Chelmsford, Essex in England, from where many of the original settlers came. The nearby communities of Groton, Dunstable and Billerica were incorporated at the same time. Chelmsford originally contained the neighboring community of West Chelmsford, now the town of Westford.

In the early part of the 18th century, Chelmsford produced many of the granite stones used in the construction churches around New England, exported via the Middlesex Canal. Chelmsford granite was also used in the construction of the Bunker Hill Monument and Washington Monument.

According to the 2020 census, Chelmsford had a population of 35,641. The racial and ethnic makeup of the population was 83.3% white, 11.6% Asian, 2.6% Hispanic or Latino, 1.7% black or African American, 0.2% Native American, and 2.4% two or more races.
