Billerica is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 40,243 at the 2010 census. Billerica is located 22 miles northwest of Boston and approximately 25 miles from Worcester. It is situated in the center of the triangle formed by Route 128/95, Route 3 and Route 495. It is one of the larger towns in Massachusetts by population.

History of Billerica

Billerica was first settled in 1653 by Europeans and was officially incorporated as a town in 1655, named after the town of Billericay in England. The Shawsheen River provided water power for industry in the early years of the town, including gristmills, sawmills and tanneries. The Middlesex Canal was built through Billerica in the early 1800s providing transportation between Lowell and Boston. The Boston and Lowell Railroad was built in 1835.

Some historic places in Billerica include the Thomas Talbot House, the John Rogers House, the Locke Farmhouse and Faulkner Mills. The town has a rich agricultural history and Concord River was known for its shad fishing. Today, the town is largely residential with some high-tech industry. The historic center of Billerica is located at the intersection of Boston Rd and River St.

Billerica Town Common

The Billerica Town Common is a historic park located in the center of Billerica at Boston Rd and Concord Rd. It was established in 1852 and contains war memorials for those who served in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Some highlights include the Civil War Memorial funded by the Billerica G.A.R. Relief Fund in 1924, the 1903 Bandstand, and a 1903 fountain funded by a $3,000 donation from Billerica son George H. Rogers who was a wealthy merchant.

Faulkner Mills

The Faulkner Mills are historic mill buildings located on Concord Rd along the Concord River. They were originally constructed in the early 1800s by Oliver Faulkner and used for wool production. The mills utilized water power from the Concord River. Some of the buildings were later used by the Talbot Mills for cotton production. The mills are an important part of Billerica's industrial heritage.

Yankee Doodle Bike Path

The Yankee Doodle Bike Path is a 4 mile paved rail trail that runs through Billerica and neighboring Bedford. It follows along an old railroad right-of-way.
