Barnstable Town, commonly known as Barnstable, is a city located in Barnstable County in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. With a population of 44,349 as of the 2020 census, it is the largest community and the county seat of Barnstable County. Barnstable is located on Cape Cod and contains several villages including Barnstable Village, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville, and West Barnstable.

History

Barnstable was first settled in 1638 and was incorporated in 1639. It was named after the English town of Barnstaple. For many years it was the county seat of Barnstable County and a major shipping port, with a large fishing and whaling industry. The town prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries but declined after the Civil War as its industries faded. In the late 20th century tourism became a major part of the local economy.

The racial makeup of the town is 87.7% White, 4.6% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. 5.7% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.
