History of Andover

Andover was founded in 1646 by early colonists from England. The land was purchased from the Native American tribes living in the area. Andover was originally going to be called Cochichiwicke, but was given the name Andover after the town of Andover in England. Many of the early residents were from Andover, England.

During the colonial era, Andover was largely an agricultural community. The town was incorporated in May 1649. Andover's early economy was based around small mills and tanneries located along the Shawsheen River. The town continued to grow steadily throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1780 during the Revolutionary War, the Massachusetts Constitution was drafted in Andover. Delegates met at the Old South Church to draw up the constitution. Two signers of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Phillips Jr. and Samuel Osgood were among the delegates at the constitutional convention.

In 1807, Phillips Academy was established in Andover as one of the first boarding schools in the United States. The prestigious academic institution brought scholars from across the new nation to Andover. The Christian theological seminary Andover Theological Seminary was founded in the town in 1808. The two Phillips Academy and Andover Theological Seminary had a significant impact on the town's development in the 19th century.

The textile mills along the Shawsheen River grew during the 1800s, reflecting the expansion of industrialization across Massachusetts. Railroad service connected Andover to Boston and other cities starting in 1836. However, Andover remained a principally residential community, avoiding the large-scale factories seen in other Merrimack Valley mill towns.

During World War I and World War II, Phillips Academy and Abbot Academy (founded in 1929) accommodated military personnel and programming on their campuses. Andover expanded rapidly after 1950 as suburbanization brought residential growth. The high-tech economy starting in the 1980s continued to reshape Andover into a prosperous Boston suburb.
