History

Amherst was first settled in 1727 and was officially incorporated in 1759. It was named after Lord Jeffery Amherst, a British Army commander during the French and Indian War. Amherst developed as an agricultural community, known for growing tobacco, hops, and apple orchards. The establishment of Amherst College in 1821, Massachusetts Agricultural College (now the University of Massachusetts) in 1863, and Hampshire College in 1965 made education an important part of the town's economy and identity.
