History

Shreveport was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a corporation established to develop a town at the juncture of the newly navigable Red River and the Texas Trail.[1] After the Texas annexation in 1845, Shreveport quickly grew and by 1860 was the third largest city in the state. It served as the capital of Louisiana from 1863 to 1865 during the Civil War. After the war, river traffic declined dramatically, but Shreveport emerged as a railroad hub and commercial center. Major local industries included oil and natural gas, agriculture, and timber. The city continued to expand through the 20th century, though it faced economic struggles in the 1980s. Revitalization efforts in the 1990s spurred growth once again.
