Metairie is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Hammond combined statistical area. As of the 2020 census, Metairie had a population of 138,485, making it the largest community in Jefferson Parish and the fifth-largest CDP in the United States. It is an unincorporated area that would be Louisiana's fourth-largest city if it were incorporated.

Metairie is located in southeastern Louisiana along the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. It is bordered by New Orleans to the east, Kenner to the west, Lake Pontchartrain to the north, and unincorporated areas of Jefferson Parish to the south. The community is known as a major suburb of New Orleans.

History

The original inhabitants of the Metairie area were Native Americans of the Houma and Choctaw tribes. In the early 1700s French settlers claimed the land along the river and Lake Pontchartrain for the French colony of Louisiana. In 1721, Louisiana governor Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville granted Sieur J.B. Le Moyne de Chateaugue with a large land concession in today’s Metairie. The Le Moyne family began developing plantations and drainage systems in the area.

In the late 1700s many exiled French Acadians made their way to Louisiana after being expelled from Nova Scotia during the Grand Dérangement. Some of these Acadian refugees settled in the Metairie area starting in 1766, leading to the community becoming known as “Metairie Ridge.”

The name Metairie comes from French métairie, meaning “small farm.” It refers to the area’s use for agricultural plantations in its early history. Throughout the 1800s, Metairie remained a chiefly rural area lined with small farms and dairies.

Significant development began in Metairie in the late 1940s and 1950s as suburbanization spread out from New Orleans. With its proximity to downtown New Orleans and access via major thoroughfares, Metairie became a popular commuter suburb. Residential neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and shopping centers began springing up. The opening of Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in 1956 further spurred growth.
