Some key facts and information about Bossier City:

History

Bossier City was founded in the 1830s by James Cane and his wife Rebecca Bennett Cane when they purchased land on the Red River from the federal government. It was originally known as Bennetts Bluff. In 1843, the settlement was incorporated as a town known as Cane City after James Cane. It was later renamed Benton until the 1870s when it became known as Bossier City after former Louisiana state senator Pierre Bossier.

During the Civil War, Bossier City was the site of the Battle of Blackwell's Plantation on July 17, 1863. This battle marked the beginning of the Taylor campaign, leading to the Battle of Mansfield. Several other skirmishes occurred in the area during this period.

After the war, the city began to grow and develop. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s connected Bossier City to markets and spurred further growth. During the 20th century, the discovery of petroleum and natural gas in the area helped grow the city's economy. Barksdale Air Force Base opened east of Bossier City in the 1930s and bolstered the city's economy. The city's population boomed after World War II.
