History

Topeka was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers who purchased the land from the Kansa Native American tribe. Topeka was incorporated as a city in 1857 and later named the capital of Kansas in 1861. Board of Education case which ruled racial segregation in public schools as unconstitutional was filed in Topeka in 1951.

The racial makeup of the city was 72.5% White, 11.5% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 7.4% from other races, and 6.3% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 18.4% of the population.
