Shawnee, Kansas - Wikipedia

History

Shawnee was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, most notably the Shawnee tribe. White settlers began arriving in the 1830s. By 1839, the Shawnee Methodist Mission had been constructed to promote Christianity and education among the Shawnee tribe.

In 1857, Shawnee was designated as the county seat of Johnson County. Growth was slow during the Civil War, but picked up again afterwards. Shawnee Township was born out of the old Kaw Township in 1873. The arrival of the railroad brought growth and expansion opportunities to the area. Over the coming decades, Shawnee established itself as an agricultural hub for potatoes, apples, and peaches.

Following World War II, suburbanization occurred in Shawnee due to new highways and people moving out of the cities. Shawnee has since developed into a bedroom community, which provides amenities and resources to residents without relying on a central business district. Shawnee continues to embrace growth and development in the 21st century.
