Salina is a city located in Saline County in central Kansas. With a population of 47,707 as of the 2020 census, it is the ninth largest city in Kansas. Salina serves as the county seat and is a major commercial and medical center in the region.

Founded in 1858, Salina has a rich history tied to the railroad, agriculture and aviation. Some of the city's major employers today include Beechcraft, Excel, Great Plains Manufacturing and Tony's Pizza. Salina is home to Kansas Wesleyan University and Salina Regional Health Center.

History of Salina [1]

The area where Salina now sits was once home to the Saline or Kaw Indians. The Saline River that runs through the county was named after the tribe. White settlers first came to the area in 1856. In 1858, a town company from Lawrence surveyed a site along the Smoky Hill River and named it Salina after the nearby river. The town was incorporated the following year.

The town soon became an important stop along the Smoky Hill Trail which ran from Kansas City to Denver. Settlers, gold seekers and supplies all traveled through Salina. In 1867, the Kansas Pacific Railroad reached Salina, connecting it to major eastern and western markets. This further cemented Salina's role as a major trading post and brought more settlers.

Salina grew rapidly thanks to the railroad and agriculture. The surrounding area was excellent for growing wheat and livestock raising. By 1870, the population was over 3,000. Industries like flour mills, planing mills, an iron works and a carriage factory sprung up. In 1874, Salina became the county seat of Saline County.

The discovery of natural gas in the region in 1887 allowed Salina to become one of the first cities in Kansas to install artificial gas lighting. Telephone lines were also installed in the late 1880s. The city continued to expand and modernize into the early 20th century.

During World War II, the Schilling Army Air Field was established on the southeast side of the city. Hundreds of trainees came through the base. After the war, the facility was renamed Smoky Hill Air Force Base. The presence of the air base stimulated the local economy. In 1951, the U.S. Naval Air Station was also opened east of the city.

The air base eventually closed in 1965. But the aviation industry remained important to Salina with aircraft manufacturing facilities like Beechcraft locating factories and their headquarters in the city.
