Olathe is a city located in Johnson County in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of Olathe was 151,580 making it the second most populous city in the Kansas City metropolitan area and the state of Kansas.

History

Olathe was founded in 1857 by Dr. John T. Barton, who came to the area to set up a medical practice. He chose the name Olathe, which means "beautiful" in the Shawnee language. The city was officially incorporated in 1858. Olathe served as a stop on the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, which brought settlers heading west through the area.
