With a population of over 50,000 residents, Lenexa is the third largest city in Johnson County, Kansas and part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Located just 20 minutes southwest of downtown Kansas City, Lenexa has grown rapidly in recent decades as a suburb and center of economic activity in the region.

History of Lenexa

The history of Lenexa dates back to the 1850s when settler James Butler Hickok squatted on land that would later become part of the town. In 1857, the town of Aubry was established along the tracks of the Missouri River, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad. The town was renamed Lenexa after resident Charles Henry Lenexa's daughter. Lenexa was officially incorporated as a city in 1907.

Agriculture originally dominated the local economy, with corn, wheat, and hay as major crops. The Old Mill Stream Ranch in Lenexa began breeding Hereford cattle in the 1940s. In 1967, the Interstate 35 corridor was completed between Des Moines, Iowa and Wichita, Kansas, running along Lenexa which brought accelerated growth.
