With a population of 214,133 as of the 2020 census, Des Moines is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is located in Polk, Dallas, and Warren counties in central Iowa along the Des Moines River.

History

Des Moines was originally inhabited by the Sac and Fox tribes. In 1843, Captain James Allen built a fort on the site where Des Moines is now located. The city was incorporated on September 22, 1851. It was named after the Des Moines River, which was itself named after the French "Rivière des Moines," literally meaning "River of the Monks."
