Waterloo is a city in Black Hawk County in northeast Iowa, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,798 making it the sixth largest city in the state. The city is part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metropolitan area and is located about 90 miles northeast of Des Moines.

History

The area was first settled in 1845 when George and Mary Melrose Hanna and their children arrived on the east bank of the Red Cedar River. They were followed by the Ament family who settled on the west side of the river. In 1850, Sumner Samuels arrived and platted a permanent settlement on the west bank, known as Prairie Rapids Crossing. By 1851, the town had changed its name to Waterloo. The name was chosen by J.H. Townsend, the city's first postmaster, who wanted to honor the town of Waterloo, Belgium, where the famous 1815 Battle of Waterloo was fought.

By 1895, Waterloo was home to several mills and factories including the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company which produced the Waterloo Boy tractor, an innovative tractor design. Over the years, the tractor business evolved into what is now the John Deere Tractor company, a major employer in Waterloo with over 3,100 employees.
