With a population of around 58,000 residents, Dubuque is the 10th largest city in Iowa. It is the county seat of Dubuque County and sits along the Mississippi River. The city has been nicknamed "The Key City" due to its location along the river and role as an important regional center of industry and transportation.

History

The area was first inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Meskwaki and Sauk people. The first European settler was French-Canadian fur trader Julien Dubuque who arrived in 1785. He established a successful mining operation and integrated with the local tribes. After his death, the land was sold and passed between France, Britain, and Spain. It officially became part of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Permanent settlement of Dubuque began in the early 1800s by people of French, Irish, and German descent. Lead mining was the driving force of the economy and immigrants came for mining work. The city was officially incorporated in 1833 and named after Julien Dubuque. It continued to grow rapidly as an industrial and transportation center. The population exploded from 1,900 in 1840 to over 58,000 residents today.
