History of Ankeny

Ankeny was first founded as a railroad town along the Des Moines and Ankeny Railroad line in 1875. It was named after John and Sarah Ankeny, workers on the railroad line. In the early 1900s, Ankeny became an agricultural center known for its production of potatoes, onions, and eggs. Eggs from Ankeny were sold across the Midwest. The city began to grow more substantially after World War II as the Baby Boom led to construction of new homes and subdivisions.

Today, while Ankeny retains some of its agricultural roots, it has largely transitioned to a commuter suburb. The completion of Interstate 35 on the western edge of Ankeny in 1960 accelerated the city's growth and connection to Des Moines. Ankeny was officially incorporated as a city in 1903 and continues to expand both its population and amenities today.
