Ames is a city in Story County, Iowa, United States. It is located approximately 30 miles north of Des Moines. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 66,498 making it the largest city in Story County.

History

Ames was founded in 1864 as a station stop on the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad and was named after 19th century U.S. Congressman Oakes Ames. Ames was chosen as the site of Iowa State University (originally an agricultural college) in 1858, prior to the establishment of the city. The university opened in 1869 impacting the early growth and development of the city.
