Wayne is a city located in Allen County in northeastern Indiana, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 17,248 residents, making it the 89th largest city in Indiana. Wayne is located approximately 6 miles south of downtown Fort Wayne and 40 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

History

Wayne was platted in 1835 by John Ewing and named for Revolutionary War General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. The Wabash and Erie Canal opened in 1835 and greatly aided the city's early growth and settlement. By 1840 the population had grown to 700 residents.

In the late 19th century, railroad development helped Wayne grow into an agricultural trade center. By 1880, the population had increased to nearly 1,200 residents. In the early 20th century, industry and manufacturing became important to Wayne's economy. Companies like Wayne Pump, Wayne Gas, and Wayne Candle Co. were established during this time.

Wayne Train Depot

The Wayne Train Depot was originally constructed in 1859 and served as an important railroad station along the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway. Today, the depot serves as a museum commemorating Wayne's railroad heritage.

The main road through Wayne is State Road 1. Wayne is located near the intersection of Interstate 69 and Interstate 469. The Fort Wayne International Airport is located about 15 miles north of Wayne.
