History of Wabash

Wabash was platted in 1834 and incorporated as a town in 1848. The Wabash and Erie Canal opened in 1835 and connected the Great Lakes to the Ohio River, causing growth in Wabash. The Miami people were the original inhabitants of the Wabash area, with the earliest European traders arriving in the 1770s. The canal brought increased economic growth to Wabash, and it became known as the "Gentleman's Town" due to the number of residents who were financially independent. The canal was abandoned in 1874, and the Wabash and Erie Canal Heritage Trail now occupies part of the canal bed. Check out the Wabash, Indiana Wikipedia page for more detailed history.
