Portage is a city located in Porter County in northwest Indiana, United States. According to the Wikipedia page on Portage, the city had a population of 36,828 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Porter County.

History

The Portage area was inhabited by Native American tribes including the Miami and Potawatomi prior to European settlement. The first European explorers arrived in 1679 with Robert Cavalier and continued through the 1700s. Portage Township was formally established in 1836 and the town of Portage was platted in 1837. Early industries included brick manufacturing, agriculture, and limestone quarrying. The Wabash and Erie Canal opened in Portage in 1837 improving transportation and commerce. The Pennsylvania Railroad reached the town in 1852. Portage later became a center of steel production and oil refining which drove much of its growth in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
