With a population of around 2,000 people as of the 2020 census, Perry is a small town located in Spencer County in southern Indiana. Despite its small size, Perry has a lot to offer residents and visitors alike.

History

Perry was founded in 1815 and was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero from the War of 1812. The town was built up around the lumber industry, with the first sawmill constructed in 1817. Timber from the surrounding forests was processed at the sawmills and shipped out via the Anderson River.

Like many Indiana towns, Perry experienced growth in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the coming of the railroad. The Ohio and Mississippi Railway was built through Perry in 1850, connecting the town with markets and supplies. The population boomed, rising from just 90 people in 1830 to over 600 by 1880.

Perry has managed to retain much of its historic small-town charm over the years. The Perry Commercial Historic District, covering 14 blocks of downtown, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the buildings date back to the late 1800s and showcase classic Italianate commercial architecture.

Located at 104 S. Rome Street, the Perry County Museum highlights the history and culture of the local area. The museum houses over 10,000 artifacts related to family life, industry, education, and other aspects of the region's heritage. Some key exhibits include a country doctor's office from the early 1900s, period clothing and textiles, Native American artifacts, and displays on early businesses and schools.

Buffalo Trace Park

For outdoor recreation, Buffalo Trace Park offers over 180 acres with wooded hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports fields. Anglers can fish in the 30-acre lake. Buffalo Trace got its name from the historic buffalo migration route that passed through the area.

Perry County Courthouse

The historic Perry County Courthouse, built in 1927, is another notable landmark located downtown at 2219 Payne Street. The courthouse has ionic columns and limestone walls, showcasing a neoclassical style. It continues to house county offices and courtrooms today.

Public Library

The Perry County Public Library provides educational and recreational resources for the community. Located at 6729 St. Charles Street, the library first opened in 1939. Today, it houses over 40,000 books, audiobooks, magazines, and more.
